This piece is one of the first mosaic works I completed, prior to any training. It is an interpretation of a contemporary aboriginal artwork titled “Pirlinyanu” by Julie Nangala Robinson.

I am fascinated by the intricate detail of “Pirlinyanu”. It is complex, yet not contrived, and has a sense of movement much like applying andamento in the mosaic medium. These elements, along with the simple use of two colours, red and white, create a stunning visual impact and challenged my understanding and perception of Indigenous art. Whilst my mosaic translation does not mimic the original, it was certainly an inspiration that really piqued my interest in taking mosaic beyond tradition and beyond a hobby.
