Much like Mosaic, Wabi Sabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection. It refers to harmony, peace, tranquillity and balance. Wabi Sabi is slow, modest, uncluttered and reveres authenticity. It allows us to gain clarity through understanding and simplicity. This Japanese perspective embraces a simple aesthetic that grows stronger as inessentials are removed.
Inspired by this term, I referenced it through humble choices regarding design and materials. Each tessera was cut from clear glass, the only mosaic material used, and hand painted in metallic gilding paste to create depth and a subtle luminosity. Design has been deliberately underplayed and relies on gradual intensity of colour to draw observers along the ‘path’ to enlightenment.
